Yeah so I have been interested in engines lately and I decided Loncin engine (the 250cc class) would be my target for the week, anyway fast forward, in my savagery I saw the reduction setup driving the balancer and starter, but who knows how much of that setup is shared across the models generally or similar ones, or if it's just specific to certain designs. Also, does reduction gearing affect anything in terms of starter wear or crank timing

It's true that once you start pulling things apart, you notice all sorts of interesting setups!
About that reduction gear for the balancer and starter, while specific ratios and designs definitely vary between models and even different engine families, manufacturers like Loncin often reuse similar core ideas or even some components across their range, especially within a certain displacement class.
So yeah, it's possible to see shared principles or even identical gears if the architecture is similar, but don't expect it to be universal!
As for reduction gearing, it generally reduces the load on the starter motor, which can actually decrease wear on the starter itself by allowing it to operate more efficiently, but it has no direct effect on crank timing.

Yeahhh, valid point, I've had more time to thnk about that after I first posted and I've done some research, I'm good now, thanks allInteresting topic! My concern is that different Loncin models might have varying setups, so assuming they're all the same could cause issues. Reduction gearing can impact starter wear and timing
